The arthritis evidence

Two separate randomized controlled trials, from two independent research groups, both found real improvement.

The first, led by Roush et al. and published in JAVMA in 2010, enrolled 127 client-owned dogs with osteoarthritis across 18 privately-owned veterinary clinics. Dogs were randomized to a test food with a 31-fold increase in total omega-3 content and a 34-fold decrease in the omega-6-to-omega-3 ratio, compared with a control food, over 6 months. The second, an independent trial led by Mehler et al. and published in Prostaglandins, Leukotrienes and Essential Fatty Acids in 2016, took a different approach: 78 client-owned dogs randomized to a placebo oil or a triglyceride omega-3 oil dosed at an average of 69 mg of combined EPA and DHA per kilogram of body weight per day. Assessments ran at baseline, day 42, and day 84. Joint swelling index and the duration of early morning stiffness both favored the fish oil group over placebo. Blood work confirmed the same mechanism again: EPA and DHA rose in plasma and neutrophil cell membranes, with a corresponding drop in a specific pro-inflammatory compound (leukotriene B4) after 12 weeks.

Two independently-run trials, from two different research groups, two different dosing approaches (diet-based versus oil-based), the same direction of result. That's a genuinely stronger evidentiary position than most supplements marketed for pets ever reach.

The skin/coat evidence

Omega-3s have real, dose-specific trial support for itchy skin too, though the effect size is honestly modest rather than dramatic. The honest number to know: roughly 15 to 20% of atopic dogs can be adequately controlled using fatty acid supplementation alone, without any other medication, per the American College of Veterinary Dermatology's own task-force review of the evidence.
