Omega-3s for Pets: The Supplement With the Most Consistent Evidence

The Short Answer
Of every supplement ingredient covered on this site, omega-3 fish oil has the strongest evidence base by a clear margin. CBD has no supporting evidence for anxiety at all. Glucosamine-chondroitin alone has real but mixed trial results. Omega-3 has two separate randomized controlled trials for arthritis and real dose-response data for skin conditions.

The arthritis evidence
Two separate randomized controlled trials, from two independent research groups, both found real improvement.
The first, led by Roush et al. and published in JAVMA in 2010, enrolled 127 client-owned dogs with osteoarthritis across 18 privately-owned veterinary clinics. Dogs were randomized to a test food with a 31-fold increase in total omega-3 content and a 34-fold decrease in the omega-6-to-omega-3 ratio, compared with a control food, over 6 months. Owners reported improved ability to rise from rest and play by 6 weeks, and improved walking ability at 12 and 24 weeks. Blood tests confirmed the mechanism was actually working: significantly higher serum omega-3 levels and significantly lower arachidonic acid (a pro-inflammatory fatty acid) in the supplemented dogs.
The second, an independent trial led by Mehler et al. and published in Prostaglandins, Leukotrienes and Essential Fatty Acids in 2016, took a different approach: 78 client-owned dogs randomized to a placebo oil or a triglyceride omega-3 oil dosed at an average of 69 mg of combined EPA and DHA per kilogram of body weight per day. Assessments ran at baseline, day 42, and day 84. Joint swelling index and the duration of early morning stiffness both favored the fish oil group over placebo. Blood work confirmed the same mechanism again: EPA and DHA rose in plasma and neutrophil cell membranes, with a corresponding drop in a specific pro-inflammatory compound (leukotriene B4) after 12 weeks.
Two independently-run trials, from two different research groups, two different dosing approaches (diet-based versus oil-based), the same direction of result. That's a genuinely stronger evidentiary position than most supplements marketed for pets ever reach.
The skin/coat evidence
Omega-3s have real, dose-specific trial support for itchy skin too, though the effect size is honestly modest rather than dramatic. A placebo-controlled trial by Mueller et al., published in the Journal of Small Animal Practice in 2004, tested EPA at 50 mg per kilogram of body weight per day (alongside DHA at 35 mg/kg/day) for reducing pruritus (itching) in dogs with atopic dermatitis, with clinical scores improving in the supplemented groups but not in the placebo group.
The honest number to know: roughly 15 to 20% of atopic dogs can be adequately controlled using fatty acid supplementation alone, without any other medication, per the American College of Veterinary Dermatology's own task-force review of the evidence. That's a real, meaningful minority, not a cure-all, and it's a more useful number than a vague "omega-3s help with skin conditions" claim, since it tells you what fraction of dogs you can realistically expect a fish oil supplement by itself to fully manage.
EPA vs DHA: they're not interchangeable
Most consumer content treats "omega-3" as one thing. It isn't, and the distinction matters for what you're actually trying to address.
EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) is the fatty acid most directly studied for joint inflammation and atopic dermatitis, per both bodies of evidence above.
DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) is more specifically relevant to cognitive function, particularly in older dogs and in puppies during neurological development, a different indication entirely from the joint and skin evidence above.
Most commercial fish oil products contain both in some ratio, and the arthritis trials above used combined EPA+DHA dosing rather than testing either fatty acid alone, so the trial evidence supports the combination, not a claim that either one works in isolation.
Omega-3 fish oil is the rare supplement on this site's own coverage where the marketing claim and the actual evidence line up. Two independently-run randomized trials found real improvement in canine osteoarthritis, and real (if modest) dose-response data supports it for itchy skin. That puts it in a different evidence class than CBD for anxiety (no supporting evidence at all) or glucosamine-chondroitin alone (real but mixed results).
