Probiotics for Dogs and Cats: Strain, CFU, and What Survives the Trip

The two gates a CFU count doesn't check
Gate one: is the exact strain named? Probiotic outcomes are strain- and formulation-dependent, not species-general. A label reading just "Lactobacillus acidophilus," with no further strain designation, tells you nothing about that specific organism's studied effects, because a different strain of the exact same species can behave completely differently in the gut. Two examples of what a real, strain-specific study looks like: Enterococcus faecium SF68, studied in shelter cats and kittens with acute diarrhea, where treated animals had fewer episodes of diarrhea lasting two or more days than controls; and Bifidobacterium animalis AHC7, studied in dogs with acute idiopathic diarrhea, where it shortened the mean time to resolution of symptoms. Both are named, tested organisms, not species-level marketing claims. If a label can't tell you the strain, it can't tell you which of these it's actually related to, if either.
Gate two: has the strain actually been tested for surviving the trip, not just assumed to? This is where a genuine, checkable difference exists between a probiotic that's been characterized and one that hasn't. A 2025 study isolated a Lactobacillus acidophilus strain from a Shiba Inu puppy and ran it through a real battery of tests: acid tolerance (survival rates of 90.41%, 92.90%, and 98.81% at pH 2, 2.5, and 3.0 respectively), bile salt tolerance, antimicrobial activity against pathogens, adhesion to intestinal cell models, and a 28-day safety study in mice with no toxicity found.
That's the actual bar. This particular strain isn't in a commercial product yet, so it's not a purchase recommendation. It's a worked example of what "this survives to the gut" actually looks like when someone tests it directly, rather than assumed from a general claim about bacteria type. Marketing built around "spore-forming survives better than vegetative bacteria" is directionally reasonable (spores are more resistant to heat and acid as a general biological fact), but this study is a real, checkable counter-example: a specific, well-characterized vegetative strain had strong acid tolerance once someone actually tested it. The real gate isn't spore versus vegetative. It's tested versus untested. Most commercial products name a species and a CFU count and stop there, without ever publishing the strain-specific survival data this study is a real example of.
The honest gap: there's no settled CFU standard
There's no research-backed CFU dosing standard for dogs or cats by breed and weight. The ranges commonly seen on labels (roughly 1 to 10 billion CFU per day for dogs, at least 1 billion for cats) are practice conventions that have become standard through repetition, not numbers derived from dosing studies matched to body size. That's worth stating plainly rather than letting a specific-looking number imply a precision that doesn't actually exist yet.
Pharmacokinetic studies tracking how long a given probiotic strain actually persists in a dog's gut after dosing are almost entirely missing. That's a real research gap, not a minor footnote: without knowing how long a strain survives and remains active after it's swallowed, a "take once daily" instruction on a label is itself a convention rather than a data-backed dosing interval.
A big CFU number and a familiar species name are the two things every probiotic label leads with, and neither one is the thing that actually determines whether the product does anything once it's swallowed. The strain, specifically, and whether that exact strain has been tested for surviving stomach acid and reaching the gut, are the two checks worth running instead. Most labels can't answer either one.
Bottom line: a probiotic label's CFU count is the number most owners check and the one that tells you the least. The two checks that actually matter are whether the label names a specific studied strain rather than just a species, and whether that strain has published survival data rather than a general assumption about bacteria type.
