Read Any Pet Food Label in 60 Seconds

The Short Answer

Four checks, in this order: the nutritional adequacy statement, the life stage it names, the guarantees, then the ingredient list. The ingredient list goes last on purpose, because it is the part people read first and the part that tells you least.

The one number the arithmetic hangs on is moisture. Every percentage on a label includes water, so you cannot compare a can to a bag until you divide it out.

And one thing almost nobody mentions: two label formats are legal right now. The Guaranteed Analysis is being replaced by a Pet Nutrition Facts box under rules approved in 2023, with a transition running to roughly 2030. Nothing on the packaging tells you which era it came from, so a scan has to work on either.

Where do I even start?

Start with the nutritional adequacy statement, and find it before you look at anything else. It is usually small, on the back or side, and it is the only sentence on the bag that makes a regulated claim about whether the food is a complete diet.

Here is the whole scan with a rough time budget, which is the useful part:

  1. Find the adequacy statement. About 10 seconds. On newer packaging, the intended use has moved to the front panel, which makes this faster.
  2. Read which life stage it names. About 15 seconds. Growth, adult maintenance, all life stages, or gestation and lactation. If you have a large-breed puppy, this step is the whole ballgame, and the reason is below.
  3. Check the guarantees. About 20 seconds, and note the moisture figure specifically, because nothing else can be compared without it.
  4. Skim the ingredient list. About 15 seconds, and mostly for species and position rather than for individual items.

Why is the ingredient list last? Because it is ordered by weight before cooking, which flatters wet ingredients, and because it cannot tell you ingredient quality at all. It answers fewer questions than it appears to.

Which of the three complete-and-balanced statements is this?

There are three, not two. Nearly every guide to this topic, including an earlier version of this one, describes two routes to a complete-and-balanced claim. AAFCO's model regulations specify three, and the third one is on real bags.

That third one is the "product family" route. AAFCO defines a family as "a group of products, which are nutritionally adequate for any or all life stages based on their nutritional similarity to a lead product, which has been successfully test-fed according to an AAFCO feeding protocol(s)."

So a food carrying that third statement was never itself fed to an animal. Its claim rests on resembling something that was.

The large-breed clause, and it takes five seconds. When a dog food's statement names Growth or All Life Stages, the regulations require one of two phrases verbatim: "including growth of large size dogs (70 lb. or more as an adult)" or "except for growth of large size dogs (70 lb. or more as an adult)."

If you have a large-breed puppy and the bag says "except," that food is not formulated for your dog. It is a single word and it is the most consequential thing on the label for the people it applies to.

On feeding trials, since they sound more impressive than they are. An adult maintenance trial uses 8 animals over 26 weeks, with the food as their sole source of nutrition. The protocol is the same for cats as for dogs. A growth trial uses 8 puppies drawn from at least 3 litters, over 10 weeks.

That demonstrates a food sustained a small group for six months without visible failure. It is a real bar and it is a low one. You will often read that "6 of the 8 must finish in good health"; the actual rule caps removals at 25% and only for non-nutritional reasons or poor intake, with poor intake only counting in the first two weeks.

What do these percentages actually promise?

They promise limits, not contents. Protein and fat are minimums. Fibre and moisture are maximums. So "minimum 26% protein" could be 30%, and "maximum 10% moisture" could be 6%.

That matters more than it sounds, and it comes back in the next section: any dry-matter figure you calculate from a label is a floor divided by a ceiling.

A claim on the front of the bag can force extra guarantees onto the back. A "low fat" claim, for instance, requires both a maximum and a minimum for fat rather than just a minimum.

Both boxes are legal until roughly 2030, because AAFCO recommends states use enforcement discretion for six years from the 2024 Official Publication.

Can I compare this bag to that can?

Not until you divide out the water. Here is the formula, and it is the only arithmetic on this page.

Dry-matter proportion = (100 − moisture %) / 100
Value on a dry-matter basis = as-fed value ÷ dry-matter proportion

In plain terms: the label's percentages include water, and a can is mostly water. So a can and a bag are quoted in different units even though both say "%".

AAFCO says so directly, and the reason to quote it rather than paraphrase is that the agency also supplies the fix: the difference between a dry-matter and an as-fed value "is proportional to the moisture (water) content of the food," which "makes direct comparison between the guaranteed analysis values on a food label and the Profile table values impossible without first correcting one or the other set of values so that both are on an equal-moisture basis." The correction is "dividing each AF value by the proportion of DM in the food."

AAFCO's own worked example is better than the usual wet-versus-dry demo, because the punchline is sharper. This is a dry dog food making a growth claim, at 10% maximum moisture, so the dry-matter proportion is 0.90:

AAFCO's own conclusion: comparing the label values directly to the profile minimums "indicates this food would appear to be deficient. However, this comparison is not valid." After correcting, "it becomes apparent that the moisture-adjusted guaranteed analysis values of the reported nutrients do, in fact, meet the minimum recommended concentrations."

Skip the conversion and you will conclude a perfectly compliant food is deficient. That is a more useful warning than the usual one.

And the wet-versus-dry case, with the moisture stated so you can check it:

  • Kibble at 26% protein, 10% moisture. 26 ÷ 0.90 = 28.9%
  • Canned at 10% protein, 78% moisture. 10 ÷ 0.22 = 45.5%

The ranking reverses. The can, which looked like a fifth of the protein, has more.

One honest caveat both halves of this share. Protein is guaranteed as a minimum and moisture as a maximum, so you are dividing a floor by a ceiling. The result is a sound comparison and an approximate number, not a measurement.

The ingredient list, last, and for what it's worth

Ingredients are listed in descending order by weight, and that weight is measured before cooking. Which is why a fresh meat listed first can end up contributing less dry material than a rendered meal listed fourth.

Tufts' veterinary nutrition service puts the limit of this section plainly: rendered meals "can vary from quite nutritious to poor quality, and there is no way to assess ingredient quality from the label or the website."

Three mechanics worth knowing, because they change how the list reads:

Vitamin and mineral premixes can be collapsed into one line. So a food that looks like it has 40 ingredients and one that looks like it has 15 may be closer than the count suggests. Ingredient-count arguments are partly a formatting artefact.

Species must be named unless the material comes from cattle, pigs, sheep or goats. That is why you see "venison by-products" rather than a bare "by-products."

Brand names and quality grades are banned inside the ingredient statement. A manufacturer cannot write "premium chicken" or use its own trademark there. If you see quality language, it is elsewhere on the package and it is marketing.

For what the scarier-sounding names actually mean, what counts as a by-product goes through AAFCO's definitions word for word.

What would make me put the bag back?

Short list, and each one is a hard stop rather than a preference.

  • No nutritional adequacy statement at all, on something sold as a daily food.
  • An adequacy statement that names no life stage.
  • "Intermittent or supplemental feeding only" on something being merchandised as a complete diet.
  • A large-breed puppy and a bag reading "except for growth of large size dogs."
  • A comparison you made without converting for moisture. Not a reason to reject the food, but a reason to distrust your own conclusion and redo it.

Bottom line: the adequacy statement is the only sentence on a bag that makes a regulated claim, so read it first and read which life stage it names. There are three versions of it, and one means the food itself was never tested. Treat the guarantees as limits rather than contents, and never compare two foods until you have divided each percentage by its dry-matter proportion, because that single step reverses the answer between a can and a bag. Read the ingredient list last and expect less from it than it seems to offer: it is ordered by pre-cooking weight and it cannot tell you quality at all. And remember the label is mid-rewrite, so the box you are looking for may be either of two.

Worth saying plainly

The order matters more than most label guides admit. Read the adequacy statement first and the ingredient list last, because the first one makes a regulated claim and the last one mostly makes an impression.

And here is the part nobody mentions: the label is mid-rewrite. Two formats are legal simultaneously, the transition runs to about 2030, and nothing on the bag tells you which era it belongs to.

So if a guide teaches you to find "the guaranteed analysis," it is teaching you a box that is being retired. The four checks above work on either.

Can I compare a wet food's protein to a dry food's directly?

No. See the calculation above. Convert both to a dry-matter basis first, and expect the ranking to change.

Is a feeding-trial food better than a formulated one?

Not automatically. A trial is 8 animals over 26 weeks on the food as their sole diet, which shows it sustained a small group for six months without visible failure. That is a real bar, and it is not a claim about optimality or the long term.

Why doesn't the guaranteed analysis give exact amounts?

What if the bag has no AAFCO statement at all?

Then it is not being sold as a complete diet. Put it back if that is what you wanted it for.

What does "intermittent or supplemental feeding only" mean?

Exactly what it says: not nutritionally complete, not intended as a sole diet. Correct for a topper or a treat, and worth noticing on anything shelved beside complete foods.
