The Cat Nutrition Essentials Checklist

The Short Answer
A cat is not a small dog, and the cleanest proof is in the regulations rather than in any argument about ancestry: dog food has no taurine minimum at all. The row does not exist in AAFCO's Dog Food Nutrient Profiles. Cat food has one, and it is actually two numbers.
The nutrients a cat cannot make in useful amounts are taurine, arginine, arachidonic acid, and vitamin A in its preformed state (plus vitamin D, which dogs also cannot synthesise well). Those are hard biochemical facts, not marketing distinctions.
But cats do not simply need more of everything. Their adult minimum for vitamin A is lower than a dog's, and so is their methionine-cystine floor. The profile is different, not uniformly higher.
What to do about it takes about a minute at the shelf, and the six checks are below. The short version is that the AAFCO statement does the work, not the ingredient list.
What a cat genuinely cannot make
Cats lost the ability to synthesise several nutrients that dogs manage on their own. That is what "obligate carnivore" means in practice, and it is worth being specific because the phrase gets used loosely.
Per the Merck Veterinary Manual, cats require dietary sources of taurine, arginine, arachidonic acid, vitamin A and vitamin D. Five, not four, and the fifth is often left off summaries including an earlier version of this page.
Taurine. Cats synthesise it too slowly to meet their own needs, and they lose it continuously because they conjugate bile acids exclusively with taurine rather than recycling it efficiently. Deficiency is not subtle in its consequences, which the section below covers.
Arginine. The cat's requirement here is unusually unforgiving, and the experiment that demonstrated it is genuinely startling. Morris and Rogers, in Science in 1978, fed cats a purified arginine-free diet: clinical signs appeared within two hours, and one 2.7 kg cat died four and a half hours after a single 8-gram meal. That was a purified experimental diet with arginine deliberately removed, not a commercial food, and the distinction matters: no commercial cat food is arginine-free. What the experiment establishes is how narrow the cat's margin is, not that ordinary food is dangerous.
Arachidonic acid. Cats cannot make it from linoleic acid the way dogs can, so it has to arrive preformed. AAFCO sets a 0.02% minimum for cats at both life stages. The Dog Food Nutrient Profiles carry no standalone arachidonic acid minimum at all.
Vitamin A, and here is where most summaries go wrong. Cats cannot convert beta-carotene, the plant form, into retinol. So their vitamin A must come preformed from animal tissue. That is a statement about source, not quantity, and the numbers below make the difference plain.
Cat versus dog, straight off AAFCO's own two tables
Every figure here is an adult-maintenance minimum on a dry-matter basis from the same document, so the columns are genuinely comparable.

Those last two rows are the reason to be careful with this topic. A "cats need more of everything" frame is wrong twice over on AAFCO's own numbers. Cats have a different requirement profile with a handful of hard non-negotiables, and anyone claiming cats need more vitamin A than dogs has it backwards.
For kittens against puppies, the gap widens where it matters: crude protein 30.0% for kittens against 22.5% for puppies, arginine 1.24% against 1.0%.
The two taurine numbers, and why almost nobody mentions the second one
AAFCO does not set one taurine minimum for cat food. It sets two, and they differ by a factor of two.

Three things follow, and each is useful at the shelf.
The canned bar is double. Not a rounding difference.
The requirement does not change with life stage. Taurine is one of the few rows where growth-and-reproduction and adult-maintenance carry the identical figure. Which means the familiar shortcut, that an "all life stages" food meets the higher standard, buys you nothing on taurine specifically. It does buy you a good deal on protein, arginine and vitamin A.
The split is set by processing form, and the practical upshot is reassuring. A wet food and a dry food both saying "complete and balanced for adult maintenance" were each held to the bar appropriate to their form. The standard already accounts for the difference, so you do not have to.
One honest limit: we are not going to tell you why the split exists. The obvious explanations get repeated confidently across the internet, and AAFCO's own published narrative does not state a mechanism in the text we could retrieve. It records only that the concentrations were carried over unchanged. So the number is documented and the reason is not, and we would rather say that than invent it.
How we found out, told properly
This is the discovery that reformulated an entire industry, and the usual version of it is too tidy.
In 1987, Pion, Kittleson, Rogers and Morris published in Science that cats eating commercial food were developing dilated cardiomyopathy, a fatal heart-muscle disease, and that the common factor was low plasma taurine. A companion 1992 paper from the same group concluded that "most cases of dilated cardiomyopathy in cats have a common etiopathogenesis related to diet and as such are preventable."
An earlier version of this page said supplementing taurine "reversed the condition within weeks." That is not supported by the paper and we have removed it. The 1987 abstract gives no time course at all. The clinical follow-up does, and it is less comfortable.
Pion et al., in JAVMA in 1992, treated 37 cats with moderate to severe myocardial failure using 500 or 1,000 mg of taurine daily:

So the honest sentence is this. Taurine supplementation took a disease with a 13% one-year survival rate to 58%, and the cats that survived the first month recovered so completely that every other heart medication could be stopped, and in 20 of 22 the taurine could be stopped too once the food supplied enough.
More than a third still died in the first thirty days. That is a better story than "reversed within weeks," and it is the actual one.
There is also a detail worth knowing about why this took so long to find: the purified-diet arm of the 1987 work took about four years to produce disease. A deficiency that slow is nearly invisible until somebody counts.
It was never only the heart
Taurine deficiency in cats also destroys vision, and this page previously mentioned only the heart.
Merck states that taurine deficiency "can cause dilated cardiomyopathy and central retinal degeneration in cats." Dai and colleagues put the full list plainly: deficiency "results in dilated cardiomyopathy, heart failure, central retinal degeneration, blindness, deafness, and poor reproduction."
Blindness and deafness. Leaving those out understates what the page's central nutrient actually does.
The six-item check
Run this on the bag before you buy it. It takes about a minute, and note that only one item involves the ingredient list.
- Find the AAFCO nutritional adequacy statement. No statement on something sold as a daily food means put it back. This single sentence does more work than everything else on the package.
- Check that it says cat. A statement referring vaguely to "pets" is not a cat food claim. The profiles are species-specific and so is the statement.
- Check which life stage it names. Growth, adult maintenance, all life stages, or gestation and lactation. Note that the large-breed qualifier you may have seen on dog food has no cat equivalent, so do not go looking for it.
- Know the taurine floor for the form you are buying. 0.10% dry-matter basis for dry food, 0.20% for canned. Identical for kittens and adults.
- Do not be alarmed if taurine is not in the ingredient list. It is normally inside a vitamin and mineral premix, which can legitimately be a single line. The adequacy statement is what tells you it is there.
- Ignore the front of the bag. Grain-free, holistic, ancestral, premium. None of those has a bearing on whether the food meets a cat's requirements.
Dogs have no AAFCO taurine minimum. Cats do. If you remember one thing from this page, that is the one.

Save that to your phone. It carries the six checks and both taurine figures, which are the only numbers on this page you need at the shelf.

This is not the grain-free story, and the difference matters
Two different heart diseases get blurred together constantly, so here is the distinction.
In cats, taurine deficiency was identified as the cause, supplementation demonstrably improved survival, and cat food was reformulated around it. Known nutrient, known fix, problem largely solved.
In dogs, the diet-associated heart disease still under FDA investigation generally occurs in animals with normal taurine. The missing-nutrient explanation has largely been ruled out for most cases, which leaves a suspected trigger with no established mechanism.
So: cats had a deficiency with a fix; dogs have a suspicion without one. Read our grain-free guide as a contrast to this page, not as support for it.
The complication, stated so nobody over-corrects: a genuine taurine-responsive subtype does exist in a few dog breeds. Dai and colleagues document taurine deficiency in 1.3% to 2.5% of Newfoundlands eating complete-and-balanced commercial diets, and golden retrievers are more prone. So "dogs make their own taurine" is nearly right rather than exactly right. Most dogs make enough; some breeds measurably do not.
The single most useful fact on this page is a missing table row. AAFCO's Dog Food Nutrient Profiles have no taurine minimum, because dogs do not need one written down. The Cat Food Nutrient Profiles do.
That is the obligate-carnivore difference, stated by a regulatory document rather than by anybody's marketing.
And it cuts the other way too. Cats' minimums for vitamin A and for methionine-cystine are lower than dogs'. Anyone telling you cats simply need more of everything has not read the tables.
One note on vet visits
Cats see vets less often than dogs, and that gap is a real problem for exactly the sort of slow, quiet nutritional issue this page is about. We are covering the size and causes of that gap properly on its own page rather than in passing here.
What is worth knowing now is the interval. The 2021 AAHA/AAFP Feline Life Stage Guidelines recommend a minimum of annual exams for kittens, young adults and mature adults, rising to every six months for seniors. Their brackets: kitten to 1 year, young adult 1 to 6, mature adult 7 to 10, senior over 10.
So a seven-year-old cat is a mature adult, and annual is the floor. The commonly-repeated "twice a year from seven" moves that threshold three years too early.
FAQ
Does taurine have to be listed on the label?
No, and its absence is not a warning sign. It usually sits inside a vitamin and mineral premix, which can be a single line. The adequacy statement is what tells you the requirement was met.
Is wet cat food better than dry for taurine?
Not better, held to a different bar: 0.20% for canned against 0.10% for dry, on a dry-matter basis. Both were held to the standard appropriate to their form.
Can I feed my cat dog food in a pinch?
One accidental meal is unlikely to hurt. As a diet, no, and the reason is in the table above: dog food has no taurine minimum, a lower protein floor, and roughly half the arginine.
Do cats need more vitamin A than dogs?
No. Their minimum is lower (3,332 against 5,000 IU/kg). The difference is that it must arrive preformed, because cats cannot convert beta-carotene.
Is the taurine problem the same as the grain-free issue in dogs?
No. See the section above.
How often should I take my cat to the vet?
Annual through the mature-adult bracket, every six months once they pass ten. Those are minimums, and a diagnosed problem changes the answer.
Bottom line: the AAFCO nutritional adequacy statement is the only thing on a cat food bag that tells you whether the food meets a cat's actual requirements, and the requirement it is tested against includes a taurine minimum that dog food simply does not have. Check that the statement exists, that it says cat, and which life stage it names. Know that the taurine floor is 0.10% for dry and 0.20% for canned, and that neither changes for kittens. Then stop reading the front of the bag, because none of the words there are regulated in any way that helps you.

See a vet rather than a web page if your cat is losing weight, eating less, breathing faster or with more effort than usual, hiding, or seems suddenly weak. Cats conceal illness well, and heart disease in particular can be advanced before anything is visible. Do not attempt to treat a suspected deficiency by supplementing on your own: taurine supplementation in the studies above was veterinary treatment of diagnosed disease, not a home remedy.
