Do Water Fountains Get Cats to Drink More?

The Fountain Probably Isn't the Fix You Think It Is

Here's the part fountain marketing skips: the evidence for the fountain itself is weak. What moves the number that matters is how wet the food is. Two controlled studies have tested whether a fountain, or a particular bowl type, changes how concentrated a cat's urine is, which is the outcome that matters for feline lower urinary tract disease (FLUTD) and calcium oxalate risk. Neither found the benefit fountain marketing implies. One found a specific bowl type made things measurably worse.

What the fountain studies found

A controlled crossover study found a fountain raised intake, but not the number that predicts disease risk. Grant (2010) put 12 healthy cats through both a water fountain and a static bowl in a 2×2 crossover design. Cats drank significantly more from the fountain: 31.6 mL/kg/day versus 22.9 mL/kg/day (P=0.038), a real and measurable difference.

But urine osmolality, the actual marker of concentration, didn't move. 2537.7 mOsm/L on the fountain versus 2468.9 mOsm/L on the bowl, a difference so small it wasn't statistically significant (P=0.66). Urine specific gravity (USG, a simpler bedside version of the same measurement) also didn't reach a protective target on either water source. No cat in the study got there on the fountain and none got there on the bowl.

Here's the mechanism gap: drinking more water only protects against FLUTD and calcium oxalate crystal formation if it truly dilutes the urine. Grant's cats drank more and their urine stayed just as concentrated, which is the study's own uncomfortable finding for anyone selling a fountain as a health purchase.

A second, larger study found something worse than "no effect." Robbins et al. (2019) tested 14 cats across three delivery methods: a still bowl, a free-falling stream, and a circulating (fountain-style) bowl. Total water intake showed no difference across any of the three (P=0.942). USG also showed no difference (P=0.595).

Osmolality did differ, and the circulating bowl came out worse, not better (P=0.009). A cat's urine was measurably more concentrated on the circulating water source than on the still bowl. That's the opposite of what a fountain is marketed to do.

A pet-tech vendor's own blog, CATLINK, cites both of these same studies and states plainly that "the science is more nuanced than fountain marketing typically admits." Worth noting, because the honest reading of this evidence isn't a secret. It's just rarely the headline.

What works, per the most current review

A 2025 scoping review across 32 publications names diet moisture as the strongest lever, water-delivery method as the weakest. Published in the Journal of Animal Science, the review synthesizes everything from 1975 through 2025 on what drives a cat's total water consumption, and ranks the interventions: diet moisture content, then dietary protein and salt levels, then water additives, with delivery method (bowl versus fountain versus circulating) coming in last.

The review also names the actual clinical target, which most fountain marketing never states at all. Roughly 42 to 51 mL per kg of body weight per day, paired with a urine specific gravity at or below 1.035. That's a meaningfully higher bar than most cats on a dry diet reach, and it's the number a cat owner should be tracking, not "does my cat drink from this."

Why diet moisture wins, with the actual numbers

A controlled study moved six cats through four diets of increasing moisture and measured the effect directly, and it's a much bigger effect than anything a fountain produced. Buckley et al. (2011) tested diets at 6.3%, 25.4%, 53.2%, and 73.3% moisture in a crossover design.

Total water intake rose from 103.4 mL/day on the driest diet to 144.7 mL/day on the wettest, a 40% increase. Urine specific gravity dropped from 1.052 to 1.054 across the three drier diets down to 1.036 on the wettest one. Calcium oxalate relative supersaturation, a direct measure of crystal-formation risk, nearly halved: 2.29 on the driest diet versus 1.14 on the wettest.

That's the size-of-effect contrast worth sitting with. A fountain moved intake but not concentration. Diet moisture moved both, and moved the crystal-risk number by nearly half.

Worth saying plainly

A cat water fountain is not a health product on the current evidence, whatever the box implies. It's a preference gadget some cats respond to and some ignore. The one intervention with a real, measured effect on urine concentration and crystal-formation risk is how wet the food is, not how the water moves.

Should you still get one?

Yes, if your cat likes it, and no, not as a health decision. There's nothing wrong with a fountain some cats genuinely prefer to drink from more often, and a cat that drinks a bit more overall isn't a bad outcome even without a measurable concentration effect. The mistake is buying one instead of addressing diet, on the assumption that it covers the same ground.

The evidence-backed move is switching to (or adding) wet food, or adding water directly to a dry diet. If your cat won't eat wet food at all, adding water to dry kibble is a workable substitute worth trying, though it hasn't been tested with Buckley's precision. Either way, the fix that has real numbers behind it is on the food side, not the water-delivery side.

If your cat has already been flagged for urinary or kidney concerns, the food conversation is one to have directly with a vet rather than solve from a bowl aisle. Regular kidney screening at a wellness visit is the other half of catching a problem before it's a crisis, especially since this article's own evidence review turned up no dedicated resource yet on this site for feline kidney disease specifically, a gap worth asking about directly at that visit.

Bottom line: a water fountain has weak-to-no evidence behind the urinary-health claim it's usually sold on. Two controlled studies found it doesn't reliably dilute urine, and one bowl type made urine measurably more concentrated.
