Does Your Pet Need a Multivitamin?

The Short Answer
No, not on a genuinely complete-and-balanced diet. If your food's adequacy statement is real (see how to check it), the food has already been formulated or tested to meet full nutrient requirements. A multivitamin on top doesn't fill a gap that isn't there, and it introduces a real risk: over-supplementing certain vitamins that the body can't just flush out.

Why over-supplementing is actually dangerous, not just unnecessary
The real mechanism most sources skip: some vitamins build up in the body, and some don't, and that distinction is what makes over-supplementation a genuine risk rather than a harmless waste of money.
Vitamins A, D, E, and K are fat-soluble. Per the FDA, unlike water-soluble vitamins, when a dog gets too much of a fat-soluble vitamin, the excess isn't rapidly excreted in urine. It's stored in fat tissue and the liver instead, which means repeated over-supplementation accumulates rather than washing out.
Vitamin D specifically causes real, serious harm in excess. The FDA states plainly that dogs with excess vitamin D may vomit, have little appetite, drink and urinate more, drool excessively, and lose weight, and that excessive vitamin D can lead to kidney failure and death. Diet-related toxicity tends to build up gradually; accidental ingestion of a vitamin D supplement or a cholecalciferol rodenticide (a rat/mouse poison using the same chemical) causes a much faster onset, sometimes within hours.
Cats are specifically more susceptible to vitamin A toxicity than dogs. Over-supplementation over weeks to months can eventually cause a poor coat, dry or rough skin, weakness, weight loss, constipation, excessive bone development, and painful or limited movement.
This is the actual reason "just add a multivitamin, it can't hurt" is wrong, not a vague caution. A water-soluble vitamin taken in excess is mostly just an expensive trip through the urinary tract. A fat-soluble one accumulates, and the accumulation itself is the toxic mechanism.
When supplementation actually is warranted
Three real, checkable situations, not a blanket "ask your vet" hedge:
A diagnosed deficiency. A vet has run bloodwork or otherwise identified an actual nutrient shortfall, not a guess based on symptoms alone.
A homemade or otherwise unbalanced diet. If a pet isn't eating a professionally-formulated, adequacy-statement-carrying commercial food, the underlying assumption behind "no multivitamin needed" doesn't hold, since there's no guarantee of completeness to begin with. A specific medical condition a vet is actively treating. Certain conditions genuinely call for targeted supplementation as part of treatment, prescribed and monitored by a vet, which is a different situation entirely from routine supplementation on top of an already-complete diet.
A real adequacy statement on a bag is proof the food is already complete. Adding a multivitamin on top doesn't fill a gap; it risks creating a new one, because fat-soluble vitamins accumulate in fat tissue and the liver instead of being flushed out. The exceptions are real and specific: a diagnosed deficiency, an unbalanced diet, or a vet-directed treatment plan. "It probably can't hurt" isn't one of them.
